Hot Spots in Canadian Retailing

By Dr. Ken Jones and Bruce McNally

This report identifies and interprets the major concentrations of retail sales activity in Canada.  Using newly released data from Statistics Canada known as SARTRE (Small Area Retail Trade Estimates), the report provides, for the first time, a ranking of major retail areas in Canada.  In this research note the hot spots of Canadian retailing are identified for: total retail sales (excluding automotive); fashion retailing and general merchandise goods.

In addition, the fastest growing retail markets over the 1990-1995 period are identified.  With the release of this information, a more precise view of the Canadian retail economy is possible.
